Today's viruses and malicious applications are more and more difficult to remove. Not even using the best antivirus around isn't enough, as viruses can still run as processes or system services even after they are destroyed. Moreover, there are times when certain stubborn applications can't be turned off, running in the background and eating up memory, even if their interface is closed. That's why a program that can monitor all running processes and services is a good idea to use.

The Windows operating system includes a feature for displaying running processes and services, but unfortunately, it lacks a lot of functions and isn't of much help for most users. A much better application in this case would be What's Running. As the name states, the software is able to display all the running processes, services, modules, IP connections and so on, putting you in total control of your computer.

The software is compatible with all Windows versions and doesn't need much effort to install. A few clicks are enough to get the program into the system, as the installation process is wizard-based.

The interface of What's Running features some tabs, each one of them displaying different types of information. For example, one tab can display running processes in real time, together with some additional information regarding them, like the name of the process's owner and the amount of CPU it takes up. If a process is considered to be suspicious, it can be turned off immediately. The same goes for running services, modules, IP connections and drivers.

Besides displaying running programs, What's Running can also take a snapshot of all of them and can compare it with a newer one, easily spotting all the differences. Even startup items can be displayed in the program's interface and one can turn each one of them off in case he doesn't need it, thus saving system memory and making it run faster.

Pros

It extends the functions of the Windows Task Manager, by displaying more information and offering many more possibilities. Besides that, system snapshots can be taken at any moment, for comparing them.

Cons

Beginners who have never used such a program might have trouble using it at first.
